Chess and Habeas Corpus
The National Journal has a fascinating account of the chess game that military lawyers played with the Defense Department, Congress and the Supreme Court to try and defend the Habeas Corpus rights of those detained as 'enemy combatants' in Guantanamo. It includes a profile of one of the detainees, Farouq Ali Ahmed, who 'appears to be neither a terrorist nor an enemy. But he has spent four years behind bars, and no end to his captivity in sight.'
