Not Just Us
Ben Walford, in an article from the UK's spiked-online, reminds us that the privileging of security over liberty is now an international trend. As Walford puts it:
"[once] the primacy of the 'right to life' takes hold...[e]very erosion of rights becomes a minor infraction on our liberties, as the 'right to life' dwarfs all other claims. What good is freedom of expression to a dead man? The police force can expect strong support when they try to extend the reach of their powers. After all, they are guardians of this Ultimate right; nullifying the terrorists who threaten to violate it on a grand scale."

This notion strikes me as a double-edged sword for hawks - the flip side being that if the right to life is paramount, then no other rights are worth going to war (thereby risking one's life) to defend, much less promote.
